Composition Ideas - Part 3

Innovative ways to end a story

1. By a question

Example : I miss my friend very dearly. How I
wish she was still studying here with me in the
same school?

Why was I impatient. I should have waited for my mum to complete her cooking for me. But it is too late. I have learnt my lesson.

2. By a reflection/moral

Example : I have learnt a good lesson from this. I will turn into a new leaf. I had promised my parents this.

Now I know why my mother has forbidden me from entering the kitchen when she was cooking. It is REALLY too dangerous.

3. By ending with a problem

Example : Sam was very happy for his friend
that he was not harmed by the kidnappers. He
was glad that the police had rescued him on
time. Just then he received a call. The caller
said in a mean voice, “You are my next target!”

The doctor had reexamined me after a week.
Unfortunately, my skin has reacted terribly to
the antibiotics given. Now I have to go for a
surgery!

Composition Ideas - Part 2

Innovative additions to the body of a
Composition

1. Using sound or action words

Example : Screech…., Crash…., Plop!. Thud!,
Ring…., Splash…, Shh…., Snap…, Splat

2. Using hyphenated or Capital Letters

Example : T-R-O-U-B-L-E , BANG!, OUCH!,
WATCH OUT…, STOP!, BOOM, HELP….

3. Using One – Liners or repeated phrases

Example : -

I looked for her behind the bush.
There was no trace of her.
I looked for her behind the pillar.
Yet there was no sign of her.
I looked for Jill behind the door.
There she was!

Something has gone wrong.
Something has gone terribly bad.
Something really worse has happened.

4. Creative dialogues

Example : “I….am…re..ally…sor…ry”, apologized John as he tried to complete his sentence.
“I …..can’t…brea….the”, she passed out before finishing her sentence.

Composition Ideas - Part 1

Innovative Ways to Begin a Composition

1. Dialogues

Example : “Oh dear!” moaned my mother. ‘Didn’t I tell all of you to leave early? Now we are caught in a traffic jam.

Sample 1: “…..and they lived happily ever after”, read out Jane. “That was a happy ending indeed,” she thought to herself as she closed her book. “Hmm, what a nice fragrant aroma. It must be Mum’s cooking,”. ( then continue with your story)
Sample 2 : “RINGGG!!!”, wailed Jane’s alarm clock. She slowly opened her eyes. Yes, it was her favourite day of the week. Sunday, the day she gets her favourite meal for breakfast. ( then continue with your story)

Sample 3 : “What? My meal is not ready? Why Mum, I’m starving”, bellowed Jane as she realised her Mum has not finished preparing her favourite desert for tea.

2. Flashback

Example : I could still remember the time that I was
locked up in that deserted house. It is still fresh in
my memory.

Sample 1 : Jane lay on the bed in the hospital.
She stared at the horrible scar on her arm. She
recalled what had happened on that unfortunate
day.

Sample 2 : Jane gasped when she read the
article in the newspaper. “Girl scalds arm
because of hot soup”. This has happened to her
before. Jane started to recall what had
happened on that miserable day.

3. Begin with the Ending

Example : I think I was the winner of the contest, but
if I was, I do not think that it was worth it. Why? Let
me tell you…..(then you can begin your story)

Sample 1: Tears welled up in Jane’s eyes. The
pain was unbearable. Nevertheless, she knew
that this accident could have been prevented if
she had not reacted foolishly. Why did she do
this? ( then continue with your story)

Sample 2: Jane promised herself that she would
not do such a rash act in future. She had learnt
a valuable yet painful lesson. This accident has
made her become wiser.

3A - Menu for Smook's Restaurant

Dear 3A pupils,

We have already thought about the crazy dishes for our alien friend Smook. Smook's mum is very delighted with your wonderful creations that she has decided to open up a restaurant in her planet.

You have been chosen as her designer for the restaurant menu.
You are going to design a simple menu for 4 new dishes that you have created.

-A restaurant menu sets the tone for the restaurant.

-It is what will keep your customers coming back.

-A restaurant menu is a reflection of your restaurant style and concept.

-When writing the descriptions of your menu items is to keep it short and simple but yet be vivid and enticing- enough to make a guest’s mouth water.

-A restaurant menu design is a reflection of the restaurant itself.

-Restaurant menu descriptions, layouts and colors, should match your restaurant concept, location or theme.

Here are some ideas for you...Click here

So get into your groups and let your creative juices out...
